Considering Moving from Indianpolis to Orlando?
06.June, 2009
Considering moving from Indianapolis to Orlando to work for Disney as a software developer. We have 2 kids. Some people say that Orlando is horrible, but then it doesn’t sound like they have salaried jobs. Can we get a decent house for $200K in a good neighborhood? If I don’t mind dodging tourists, is it a good place to raise a family? (we homeschool so don’t care much about the school system)
I know someone who lives there and visit often. There are numerous smaller communities nearby with great roads into the area. WDW has great perks and I would say it is not a bad area to live in, just not downtown Orlando.

well south of Orlando there are a million coockie cutter homes that are new for 150k-300k and they arent the safest and are populated mostly by minorites, but thats closer to disney, now I live in North Orlando which is great, Seminole County has the best schools in the state, sabal point elementery, rock lake middle, lake mary high, lake brantley high, lyman high, all great, with great neighborhoods too, but houses in Orlando are alot more expensive then in indianopolis especially on the north where we have about 300k-15 million dollar houses, (mostly from 400-1 million, but there are a few more expensive and less expensive than taht, and there is no public transportation besides buses(which are terrible) and its an hour drive to disney from seminole county, now it goes like this,
seminole county is on top of orange county , and orange county is where downtown orlando is, the sprawl of orlando goes through orange county up through seminole and volusia(which is north of seminole)
and south of orange to osceola, which is where disney is, houses in osceola are alot cheaper , but they get more tornados, and it is definately poorer and more rural, but there are of course some very nice neighborhoods, just like every poor/rural place, sorry but thats a little recap for you, i suggest somewhere in orange county south, or east of downtown, just go to maps.google.com and look at some cities, another great website is zillow.com it'll tell you how much every home is worth and you can see neighborhoods
the weather is horrible from april to september, the traffic on I-4 is horrible at rush hour, lots of crime in orange and osceola counties, but people from up north seem to like it since everyone here is from there or there parents are. good luck

If you are looking to buy right now, you could get really lucky on housing. Many really nice houses in foreclosure and they are being sold way below FMV. The market won’t stay this low for long though, so if you are really interested now is a great time to come down and look around. To give you an idea, a house in my neighborhood (St Pete not Orlando) 3/2 is being sold for $40,000. It’s crazy!
Now is the time to buy.

I’ve lived in Orlando for over 15 years, and I like it. It’s a nice place and it has a lot to offer.
Because the housing market is in bad shape, it is an extreme Buyer’s Market. You should be able to find a decent home for around 200k to 250k.
Here’s my list of areas to check out and which to avoid:
Check out:
Winter Garden < -Near Disney!
Windermere <-Near Disney!
Winter Park
Maitland
Casselberry/Altamonte Springs
Dr. Phillips/Sand Lake (In Orlando) <-Near Disney!
Avoid:
Pine Hills (32808, 32818)
Parramore
East Orange County (Semoran, Goldenrod, Curry Ford, Econ Trail)
Metrowest (It will look nice and clean. It is NOT.)

Orlando and Central Florid have a lot to offer! There are lots of pros and cons to raising a family down here!
As others have stated there are lots of outer suburbs where you can find a good community and live comfortably and affordably.

There are pros’s and con’s to every area. Orlando is not as bad as some make it seem, there are parts of Orlando that are bad. You can find a decent house in a decent area in Southwest Orlando near Disney. The things that may take getting use to, being from the midwest would be
1. A MASSIVE amount of people from NY City
2. A MASSIVE amount of people from Puerto Rico, Spanish is a big thing here
3. Hurricanes, However we have been pretty lucky, and they are seasonal not year round.
All in all it’s not bad
No Snow
